'All Lined Up' Challenge!

Hello and welcome to all of my crafty friends! I'm back for a second time this week. I'm sharing a card that's definitely outside my usual style. It didn't start out that way, but everything I did seemed to go wrong. My son and I have been sick with high fevers and sore throats since we came home from vacation. Crafting is my escape from all things stressful, but this week was a challenge. The good news is my fingers are covered in blue/green ink and I accidently wore two different colors of socks today. That means tomorrow is going to be amazing!

Today marks the start of a new two week challenge at The Frilly and Funkie Blog! Our challenge theme is All Lined Up. Jenny is our hostess, and her guidelines are as follows: 

For this challenge you need to think in straight lines! Be it rows or columns, stripes or even grids make sure those vertical and/or horizontal lines are a clearly visible part of your vintage or shabby chic projects (the edges don't count!)

At the end of the challenge the team will choose their top four picks. Our first place winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at the The Frilly and Funkie Blog. Three additional talented participants will receive badges to display on their blogs. I chose vertical lines in the form of this aged wooden fence paper from Maja Design's Vintage Summer Basics. Torn strips of cardstock receive a coating of Distress Stains and are layered vertically and horizontally.

I don't have a 'before' photo, but when everything was stained it was a little too bright for me. I gave everything a coat of Tim Holtz Distress Vintage Collage Medium to tone it down. It's still bright, but it took the edge off.    

The flowers (from Prima) and leaves are colored with Distress Stains to coordinate with my project. I did a little embossing with a Tim Holtz stencil, and tucked in a bit of cheesecloth.

Summer Fun Card!

Hello! How are you doing on this lovely day? I'm so happy you've stopped by. It's my turn to post on the Maja Design Blog! I'm super excited about Maja Design's new Summertime paper collection, so I'm featuring it again this week, but in the blue colors. 

Summer is well and truly arrived. I live in the Southeastern United States near the Atlantic Ocean. We have a humid, subtropical climate, and temperatures have been holding in the mid 90's for over a week now. A bicycle ride along the beach is a refreshing way to beat the heat, so this is my inspiration for my card.

The base of the card begins in the usual way, by distressing, layering, and stitching the design papers. The center of the card is cut with a Spellbinders circle die to create an opening peeking through to another layer of paper.

For my coastal theme I want a little bit of mixed media feel. Paint is randomly splattered around the card, but after the embellishments are in place you can only see a few areas in the center. The twine bow is distressed with the same paint.

The flowers are handmade, coated in gesso, and colored with Distress Stains, Lindsay's Stamp Gang Starburst Sprays, and watered down acrylic paint.

Here is a close up of the circle cut out. Stained cheesecloth and Prima Art stones lend a seaside feel to this project.

The bicycle image below is part of the paper collection. It's fussy cut and popped up with foam adhesive.

Stamping is added to opposite corners of the card.

I enjoy embellishing the inside of my cards. This one is stamped with script and a bicycle to coordinate with the front.

Frilly and Funkie's All in the Family!

Happy Wednesday! I hope you're having a wonderful day! Independence Day is almost upon us. Do you have plans for a celebration or a weekend getaway?

Many of my happiest memories are tied with our vacations in the Smoky Mountains. We've spent summers there with our children since they were babies, and now we enjoy the same wonderful times with our grandchildren. The photo below is from the summer of 2006. Our son was 13 and our granddaughter was 2. Our son was helping Savannah catch tadpoles in a cup. I snapped this photo at the very moment she put her arm around him for a hug. 

Summer in the Smokies means every color of green imaginable! It is everywhere you look. I had to step outside my comfort zone again. None of the pretty design papers in my stash coordinated with the colors I needed. I created my own using white cardstock, Tim Holtz Distress Sprays, and Lindsay's Stamp Gang Starburst Sprays. I stamped a Prima image in the background, then embossed with a Prima stencil and clear embossing paste to give an appearance of water droplets. 

The flowers are a combination of handmade and purchased. The cheesecloth is stained to coordinate with the background. Some natural twine ties everything together.
